The damn limit still eludes me!

Post  Maddox on 2010-12-21, 23:43

As planned I headed out today to try and chase down some honkers (the birds Laughing). I headed out around 1:00 for my first afternoon waterfowl hunt ever. As some of you have seen about a week ago I had an inordinate amount of geese hanging around the house consisting of several thousand Snow Geese and a hell of a bunch of Canada's. Now about 3 days after the Snow Geese showed up they took off and haven't been seen since and I was a little concerned as I hadn't seen the usual Canada activity. I had been telling Big J I was concerned they had peeled off with the Snow's due to all the small ponds around here freezing up. Either way I was hell bound on heading out today to check the situation.

Beautiful afternoon!

Well.....fortunately for me I was wrong! After sitting out there for about 2 hours, completely thinking I was right they had all left I heard my first honk. A huge flock had gotten up a few fields over and was headed my way. Don't worry they never even saw my decoys (At least that is one flock that might come in next week). After that it got wound up and a about a mile away I could see flock after flock of 100 or so birds moving across the skyline. Before you all get bored I will get to the point, I finally got one of these flocks off in the distance to see me waving the goose flag like a mad man and head in. This flock had 100 birds easy in it and I let the first 15 birds land in the decoys while the rest worked me over. For some reason the rest of the flock just wasn't buying in so I popped up and picked off 2 out of this flock. As the title says I couldn't seem to get the 3rd one in the bag as flock after flock worked over me and just wouldn't commit. It is probably time to grow a set and take some shots at geese farther than 15 yds away so I will work on that for next time. Great day and can't wait for Monday to do the combo Dove/Goose hunt so stay tuned! Oh yeah I am hoping to head out after ducks on Friday morning too so hopefully I will get an early christmas present.

One of these days the picture is going to have 3 with my limit!

I have heard the geese are hot out there at the moment but will let you know how we make out. The guys I am hunting with have been killing the ducks down in Milford, DE but my hopes are high for a few fast flyers to head out way.
